Well I thought today was going to be a good day.  It started so well, I got up nice and early, took the dog for a nice long trot, nothing interesting on the tele, well its daytime TV so nothing decent, will be on. So I turned on the 360, a few games on manager mode on FIFA 08, then its of to work I go.

The console is starting to freeze more and more. It froze for the last time. I found the warranty booklet and called Microsoft support for some assistance. As I think its the drive or something, as its stopping to not be able to read DVD's any more .

Simply the console froze no means of going back to the dashboard, its switch of the console with heart in the mouth, hoping the read rings never appear they didn't phew, however the game still froze. No red rings.  But still something isn't quite right.

I spoke with some fellow in Microsoft support, actually really helpful. As the issue was "temperamental" running through the diagnostics he suggested that I would run through. It seemed to have helped. However I didn't actually do anything, I removed the power cable, the cable that connects to the tele, the hard drive and the game pad. Powered her back on, just loving the temprementalness with the 360 it works, well it seems to for now. Great just works when you call support.

I have to got to work, we'll see when I get back if all is well.

Thanked the helpful guy in support and of to work I go. As I mentioned earlier today seems to be a good day, work was busy, very busy. Odd lucky things happened to be me during the day I bought a really large baguette and I knew the young lady behind the counter who only charged me 80 pence for the baguette, she shouldn't of but who am I to complain, I use a vending machine later that day, the machine gives me far too much change.

Enjoying my luck for the day, I return home, crack open a beer, roll up a cigarette, and boot up the 360, then its the dreaded read rings of death. I am not a happy bunny, I know that my Xbox 360 is out of warranty. So I call Microsoft support again, for some assistance.

I am on hold for ages, the phone rings and rings, I get through, but the mobile is on speakerphone, I try to switch it back to normal hearing mode, whilst saying "Hello.....helloo.... Helllooooo.." The agent puts the phone down, that has really narked me off. As I work in support, technical support, I have had a lot of tough work to do understaffed and the usual pressures, I appreciate that we all have to do our jobs, I would never do that.

I never, or can ever actually recall making a complaint, well ever.  But to Micro$oft, I thought I am not to gain here, might as well complain to the dog.

Well rang them again, on hold forever, well I know how the customers who I deal with every day feel now. I get through to another support guy. Who never seemed to want to help. I never shouted I explained that here's the reference number and the console is showing the red rings of death, this is what I have done to see if I can get it to work, also re-tried what I ran through with another support person earlier though with no success.

Though I may as well of explained this to my dog.  As he wasn't paying any attention, I loath to complain as this is what I deal with everyday. So I told him, straight, it sounds, well it clearly appears that you don't want to help me. I am on hold for ages, get through to a support agent, they put the phone down, I get through to you and you clearly don't want to help me, you explain that the console is 18 months old and I will need to pay for the repair?

Without going into too much detail, I re-iterated that this is well documented its all over the news that the 360's are faulty, not all but some are, I was lucky that it hasn't happened already, after my polite rant, he offered the repair at no cost.

Well I am currently waiting on the email for UPS, to collect, more news on this when I have it. I actually enjoy the 360, I am gutted that its got a hardware fault. But those who are in a similar boat may find this link amusing for a guy who had 11 console replacements and records a phone call to Microsoft support, asking the support guy to read out the number of support tickets, made me chuckle. Also check out Wikipedia as they have an interesting article about the red rings of death, and coolers where the coolers can cause problems that they are trying to prevent.

Shall you fall into this predicament, you may need to point out the warranty has been extended to 3 years from date of purchase, not the 1 year that they mention when you call support . As stated in this letter from Peter Moore on Xbox's site.
